Choosing Our Words Wisely

Rosita L Davis

Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.—Eph. 4:29

Communication is a vital part of any society, whether it be verbal, written, or visual. From the television, internet, news paper or social media. However, speech forms the major part of our communication, and the words we choose can sometimes cause us and those around is to stumble. When we speak we should choose words that build up, rather than those which tear down. We should be people who always speak with wisdom, because we can be judged by our words, especially if they are not uplifting.

Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person. (Col. 4:6). There are many problems which come from careless words spoken, i.e. divorce, arguments, broken relationships, and misunderstandings. The Psalmist David said: Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips! (Psalm 141:3)

Is our tongue under the control of the Word of God? Are we known by others  as a people who speak wisely? The words we choose can cause untold damage—wars, murders, separations, family disputes, and countless arguments. The book of Proverbs is full of instructions on the tongue and use of wise words, which can help us master one of smallest parts of our bodies, which can sometimes cause the largest damage (Jas. 3:8-14).

There is no place for name calling, blaming, destructive criticism, angry words, lying, or dirty jokes in our speech. Instead we should choose words which build up, encourage, show appreciation, understanding, empathy, sympathy, caring, and helpful counsel.

Therefore, your wise words should reflect your conduct (or behaviour). Judas betrayed Jesus with his words. May God enable us to use our words to encourage by showing His love and His saving grace.

The bottom line is that every word we speak will be brought into judgement (Matt. 12:36-37), so let’s start today to choose our words wisely.
